Wijnaldum featured in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham in the EFL Cup, which saw them make 11 changes from the win over West Brom the previous Saturday.
Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has told the club’s official website that he was impressed with how the Reds were able to make so many changes to the side for Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup and still perform well.
Jurgen Klopp made 11 changes from the side that beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at the weekend and still managed to put in a good performance to ensure their progression to the last eight of the competition.
Youngsters Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ovie Ejaria made their first starts for the first-team at Anfield, while more established figures in the squad such as Wijnaldum, Lucas Leiva, Daniel Sturridge, Simon Mignolet and Divock Origi were all part of the side.
The Dutchman told liverpoolfc.com: “It was really impressive.
“We must be fair – Tottenham were also playing with a lot of young players. But we have a good squad with a lot of quality. The players showed that on Tuesday.
“I think it’s a good sign for a team that you have players who can come in and fit into the team immediately, and it’s easy to make changes for a manager, that it’s not a problem when someone is out and you can change to a player with good quality. It’s a good thing for the team.”
Tuesday’s win is enough reason for the club to be encouraged about the depth the squad has. Sturridge got both goals but is finding it hard to get into the starting XI at the moment and Origi performed well but he is only managing to start games in the EFL Cup.
It is not just a starting XI Liverpool have but a decent squad overall. Wijnaldum himself has had regular starts this season but may have slipped down the pecking order for the coming games in place of Emre Can. That said there is plenty of competition for places at the club and the standard seems to be high.
