A selection of the latest stories in the media involving Liverpool Football Club this Monday morning.

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is expected to withdraw from the England squad for their games with Lithuania and Italy according to reports in the national press.

Lallana is said to have suffered a groin injury which, in part, led to his withdrawal from yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at half time.

Manager Brendan Rodgers said the first half display from Liverpool was costly in the defeat against United, where the Reds found themselves a goal down at the break.

The result now leaves Liverpool five points behind Manchester United with eight games remaining in the season, making their task of Champions League qualification look all the more difficult.

Rodgers told reporters after the game: “In the first half, we weren’t passing it anywhere near well enough. Ultimately we weren’t pressing either.

“Both sides of our game suffered. We just didn’t play well enough. You have to accept that. It just wasn’t our day.”

Rodgers did however stress that their chances of qualifying for the Champions League for a second successive season are very much alive after the game.

The Reds face Arsenal next at the Emirates Stadium, and can achieve a maximum of 78 points in the Premier League, and with Rodgers targeting 74 points earlier last week, he anticipated there would be a few bumps along the way.

He added: “It’s a big challenge. But when I looked at the 10 games that were remaining, it was always going to be difficult to win all 10 of them.

“So we built in a loss and maybe some draws in that. We’d hoped it wouldn’t be in this game against our rival. But it’s still very much possible.”
