Young Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has explained why he suffered a dip in form after he burst onto the scene in his first season at Anfield – saying he was in awe of the likes of Luis Suarez.

Sterling is quoted in several newspapers this morning, saying: ‘I realised I need to stop being shy among the senior boys. The best way of proving yourself is on the pitch. I had to be more confident.

‘I wasn’t confident enough to have a shot myself and instead I’d pass it to someone like Luis Suarez. I needed to be more confident again – you have to respect the senior players around you but you have to stamp your own mark on the game.’

Manager Brendan Rodgers has got a sense that Liverpool expect to win all their home games this season, including tomorrow’s clash with league leaders Arsenal.

Rodgers is quoted in the Liverpool Echo saying: ‘When I came in here we were expected to win but maybe the pressure of that sometimes was too much.

‘Now we genuinely go into a game expecting to win – no matter who we are playing against home or away.

‘We are dealing with that pressure much better. We’ve still got areas to work on but we are controlling games much better and we have that goalscoring threat.’

The Reds’ boss has also said that qualifying for the Champions League is vital in order to attract top class players to the club.

He said: ‘That’s something we are working tirelessly towards trying to achieve and we will continue to do that.

‘Make no bones about it, we know what we need to get in this summer to help us going forward.’
