The former defender will have responsibilities for scouting in Spain and Portugal.
Liverpool have appointed former Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate as a scout, according to numerous reports, including one from the Liverpool Echo.
Woodgate will be focusing on Portugal and Spain as it seems Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is expanding his scouting network in search of talent.
Not many people saw this particular move coming and naturally the response from Liverpool fans on Twitter has been one of surprise, although there have been the inevitable tiresome references to the fact Woodgate had a playing career ravaged by injury, meaning he retired from professional football this summer.
Some referenced that he was a defender capable of attracting the attention of Real Madrid in his playing career and hope that he can spot talent in the game just as well, while some reacted as if Woodgate was going to somehow play for the club.
It will be interesting to see if Liverpool have any success in signing players from that region in the near future as a result of Woodgate’s work, as recent signings from La Liga and Portugal have not worked out too well for the Reds.
