Stewart starred in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised the performance of midfielder Kevin Stewart in the Reds’ 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup, the Liverpool Echo reports.
Stewart was handed his first start of the season as Liverpool booked their place in the quarter-finals of the competition and Klopp gave him something of a backhanded compliment about his playing style.
Klopp is quoted by the Liverpool Echo, saying: “He was very important. I have said a few times, he’s the best challenger in the squad.
“One-on-one he is really ugly to play against. He’s a good footballer, good player and he had a good game. Very good.”
The 23-year-old certainly caught the eye last night, and even gained the praise of legendary Reds midfielder Graeme Souness on Sky Sports during their coverage of the game.
Stewart is one of the more experienced fringe players having had opportunities from the bench this season late on in games, while Klopp called on him in several matches during the second half of last season.
He is a player that seems to know his limitations but can break the play up well, find space and then get Liverpool moving forward. The fact he knows his limitations demonstrates an intelligence that can be quite hard to find among many footballers.
His manager seems to be a fan of him, and although Stewart’s game time is a little sparse he seems to be happy with the opportunities he is getting and has reliably done a good job when he has come into the side. His role against Tottenham was no exception.
