Klopp now has a decision to make when it comes to his goalkeepers with Loris Karius returning to fitness.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said it was the plan to have two strong goalkeepers when he signed Loris Karius.

The German has now returned to full fitness and was on the bench for the weekend’s win over Leicester City, with Simon Mignolet continuing in goal for the Reds.

Karius broke a bone in his hand in pre-season meaning that Mignolet has started all of the games so far this season, and Klopp seemingly wants both men vying for the number one spot.

He is quoted in the Liverpool Echo, saying: “I knew when we signed Karius that we now have two really strong goalkeepers. That was the plan but unfortunately Loris broke the bone in his hand which is not too cool for a goalkeeper.

“But he is now back. There is no pressure or something; that is the challenge and competition. In the end I want us all to be best friends, even when our best friends play in the same position.

“That’s how it is, that’s football, it’s about performing. And we all have this pressure. I’m happy that Loris is back. He is a great, great character – a really good guy – and a real goalkeeper so that’s good.

“I’m fine and if they all stay fit in this position, that’s all I need.”

A big save with the game at 3-1 on Saturday evening against Leicester may be enough for Mignolet to retain his place for Friday night’s huge trip to Stamford Bridge.

Karius may have to bide his time but he could be given an opportunity when the Reds travel to the iPro Stadium on Tuesday in the EFL Cup to take on Derby County.

It will be interesting to see what decision Klopp makes for that game and the subsequent Premier League match against Hull City on the following Saturday.

One thing is for sure in that Karius left Mainz to play regular football for Liverpool, while Mignolet will be determined to hold on to his place despite a mixed time as the club’s goalkeeper for the past few years.
