Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has written in the Liverpool Echo that this current side is more of a team than the one that went close to winning the Premier League title in 2013/14.

Liverpool went top of the Premier League at the weekend following a 6-1 win over Watford at Anfield and there have been many comparisons between the two sides, especially in terms of the amount of goals they score and the struggle to keep clean sheets.

Liverpool's Sadio Mane scores their fifth goal

Aldridge pointed to the contribution in terms of goals from this side compared to the one from three seasons ago.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “We were in a title race back in 2013/14 but the big difference then was that we had Luis Suarez who was frighteningly good. He was winning us games single handedly.

“The likes of Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling were buzzing off Suarez. Now we’ve got four players doing that for us and it’s great to watch.

“This is more of a team. It’s not about one player. They have got belief in each other and we’re getting goals from all over the place.”

Liverpool's Emre Can scores their third goal

Liverpool have scored a total of 30 goals in the league this season, but their top scorer is Sadio Mane with six, which demonstrates that the attacking threat is shared out.

Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino are both finding the net regularly while Adam Lallana, James Milner, Dejan Lovren and Emre Can have all been chipping in with goals.

It can be easy to forget that Suarez was banned for the first five games of the 2013/14 season and that Liverpool still needed to start building a platform without him, but it is hard to dispute that particular challenge was down to heavy involvement from the Uruguayan.

But Liverpool this time also have more options in terms of their team selection that can provide the goals for the team, which probably enhances their chances over the course of the season.
