John Aldridge backs Alberto Moreno to bounce back from Manchester City error

Alberto Moreno made a big error in the loss to Manchester City but John Aldridge saw enough promise in his performance.

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has backed new signing Alberto Moreno to bounce back after his error led to the opening goal in the Reds’ 3-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Monday night.

Just before half-time in Monday night’s game, Moreno failed to make sufficient contact with the ball when trying to clear his lines, allowing Stevan Jovetic to give City the lead.

In his Liverpool Echo column, the former striker said: “It was a difficult game for Alberto Moreno to make his Liverpool debut in on Monday night.

“He was caught napping for Manchester City’s opening goal, allowing the ball to bounce and for Stevan Jovetic to nip in and score.

“Disappointing, but I saw enough in his performance to see why Liverpool have splashed out on him.

“He looked good going forward, very Spanish in his style with his pace and his technique. He’s going to be Spain’s left back in the future by all accounts, so we know his pedigree.

“He will improve, just as Liverpool will. It was a tough lesson for him, but he will learn from it.”

Moreno signed from Sevilla for £12 million and the 22-year-old is seen as the possible answer to what has been a problematic position for the Reds.

He will probably not face a harder game all season, or indeed for the rest of his Liverpool career by visiting the home of the champions on his debut, whilst trying to adapt to the Reds’ style and defensive structure.

Also, when Lazar Markovic was introduced into the action, Moreno seemed to link up well and his attacking instincts were there for all to see.

There was a lot of promise in the performance despite the error, and despite picking up an ankle injury towards the end of the game but the Reds will be hoping it isn’t too serious, and he can continue to adapt to life at the club by participating in the fixture against Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
