Molby thinks conceding goals can keep the Reds sharp.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby has written in the Liverpool Echo that he believes the side’s shortcomings can actually help the side remain sharp and concentrated.
The Reds’ defence has come under some scrutiny this season as they have only been able to keep one clean sheet from their opening 10 games, and last week’s 4-2 win over Crystal Palace received plenty of plaudits for the side’s attacking display, but more scrutiny at the back.

Molby wrote in his Liverpool Echo column: “The players know. When we concede a goal there is no warning, whether it’s Hull City, Tottenham in the cup, Palace last week, whatever. From nowhere, it’s in the back of the net.
“Now this sounds a bit mad, but I think it helps the team to stay sharp, because they know that they can’t be complacent, and that they might need to pick it back up again if and when they concede.
“At Palace, they shot themselves in the foot a couple of times, but they stayed on their toes and let their quality do the talking.

“If what we’ve seen in the first 10 games is what we’ll see for the rest, it’s going to be some season isn’t it?!”
One can see where Molby is coming from, at times a goal in reply for the Reds’ opponents can act as something as a wake up call. However, they will want to tighten up at the back and get some more clean sheets on the board to stop a narrative developing that they are poor at the back.
The reality is they concede few chances, but they need to stop conceding from those few chances. They’ve managed to see out games after conceding goals, which shows they have got an element of maturity and solidity within them, but it would ease a few worries if a few more clean sheets were on the board in the near future.
