Jan Molby offers his thoughts on Daniel Sturridge’s comments about his role in the side

Molby says he had no problem with Daniel Sturridge’s comments when asked about his role, and doesn’t think Jurgen Klopp will either.

Liverpool legend Jan Molby has said he’d have no problem with comments made by Daniel Sturridge earlier in the week about the position he operates in.

Sturridge answered questions from reporters which made several headlines on the back pages of newspapers saying that he wasn’t happy in a wider role and wanted to play through the middle. They reported by the Express as well as other outlets.

But Molby compared the situation that one of his former teammates faces at Juventus, and cited comments made by James Milner about his left-back role that were similar, and didn’t make any headlines at all.

Molby wrote in his Liverpool Echo column: “Playing centre forward is a specialised role, you have set movements and you need to know exactly where you are and what’s around you.

“Remember Ian Rush going over to Juventus and playing out wide? He was a fish out of water, he wasn’t used to it.

“The key thing for Sturridge is getting minutes on the pitch, getting that sharpness back. When Daniel Sturridge is razor sharp, you can see it a mile off. He isn’t razor sharp at the moment.

“He’ll get there, though, if he can stay injury free. He’s too good a player not be playing. And when he’s back to his best, he’ll be playing through the middle, I can assure you.”

Sturridge seemed to play in a wider role in last week’s defeat to Burnley where he couldn’t really get into the game, and was substituted for Divock Origi. In the EFL Cup game against Burton Albion on Tuesday he managed to find the net twice after coming off the bench.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp didn’t seem to have any problem with the comments made by Sturridge in his press conference yesterday.

Klopp talked about ‘flexible football’ and the need for Sturridge to be in positions to finish moves off. Not many seem to be surprised that a centre-forward, whose goalscoring record is pretty prolific, wants to play through the middle.

Molby seems pretty convinced that Liverpool will have their main goalscoring threat playing through the middle a lot more this season, and that the headlines were blown out of proportion.
