The Black Cats made it three wins from four at the weekend.
Sunderland midfielder Jan Kirchhoff has told the Sunderland Echo he is convinced there are at least three teams who are not as good as the Black Cats in the Premier League.
Kirchhoff had a big hand in the opening goal of the weekend’s 2-1 win over Leicester City at the Stadium of Light as his header was diverted into the net by Foxes defender Robert Huth to open the scoring.
It made it three wins from four games for David Moyes’ side as they moved to within a point of safety, with their next game a trip to bottom of the table Swansea City next weekend.
Kirchhoff told the Sunderland Echo: “When you see the quality of the squad, the kind of player we have, we should be able to stay in the league.
“There are at least three other clubs who aren’t as good as us. We are good enough to win against a lot of teams in this league. We shouldn’t be insecure or frightened.
“For sure, we have momentum on our side but we are good enough to play like this. It was not lucky that we beat Leicester, it was the strength we had in the squad.”
After a very poor start to the season which saw Sunderland go without a win in their first 10 league games under Moyes, they seem to have found a way of playing that is effective, giving them confidence and ensuring they are performing at a relatively high level.
Sunderland are starting to get wins against sides they really need to beat to ensure they will survive this season. As Kirchhoff outlines in the same interview, the Swansea clash is a big chance for Moyes to lead his men out of the bottom three.
If Sunderland have a bit more luck with injuries than they have had so far this season they have a very competitive squad to choose from for the duration of the campaign, and they will compete against most sides in the division.
They just need to keep this recent good form going to ensure survival in the Premier League once again.
