Lovren seems to have established himself under Jurgen Klopp, but Carragher thinks there is more to come while acknowledging his improvement.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that defender Dejan Lovren still has some way to go to being the £20 million defender from Southampton a couple of seasons ago.
Lovren was brought into the club by Brendan Rodgers in the summer of 2014 to help address a leaky defence, but he never found the kind of form that suggested he was worth the money paid for him by the Ulsterman.
Carragher believes that was down to the way Rodgers set up his side during his Anfield tenure, and that Lovren is more suited to the set-up undertaken by Jurgen Klopp.
In an interview with Goal, Carragher said: “He gets that big-money move to Liverpool and it seemed to fall apart in his first season. I think it was helped by the way Brendan Rodgers’ team and the way they set up, it was very on the front foot, so as a defender it makes it more difficult.
“I don’t think it’s the case with Jurgen Klopp. That’s what’s helped his performances and made him look more like a £20 million player. But I still think there’s a long way for him to go yet, there’s more improvement I’d like to see at Liverpool, but he improved vastly in his second season.”
There have been noticeable improvements in Lovren’s performance. There have been far fewer errors that would be hard to explain and he was a lot more solid as last season went on.
So much so that Klopp evidently feels he should part of his back four for every game given he has started consistently this season and has looked pretty solid partnering Joel Matip in their first competitive games together.
