Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has suggested that he does not want the club to be a stepping stone for players looking to further their careers.
The Magpies have lost Andros Townsend and Georginio Wijnaldum to Crystal Palace and Liverpool respectively, while Moussa Sissoko’s future has yet to be resolved.
The recently appointed skipper has acknowledged that he has a role to play in trying to keep members of the squad happy off the field even if he cannot do it in the game itself.
He’s quoted in the Chronicle saying: “We have a big in-depth squad. But if you aren’t playing you have to stay happy.
“This is what we are and we have not come here to try to get a move to another team. We are here to get back to the Premier League so players need to stay happy and that’s my job.”
With fixtures coming thick and fast for the club in the early stages of the season, many players are likely to get their chance, even if they did not feature in the opening day defeat to Fulham on Friday night.
Lascelles is keen to embrace the job given to him by manager Rafa Benitez as the side looks to return to the top flight at the first time of asking. Team spirit is going to be an important thing off the field in order for the side to do well on it.
It is clear with his comments that he wants a good attitude from his teammates as well, as he goes on to say the side should not be complacent and that they should be acting like one of the best teams in the division. It is a clear message for the rest of the side.
