Newcastle United have had the perfect response to their early setbacks.

Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden has admitted the side could have had a better start to the season, but is satisfied with what the Magpies have produced so far.

Newcastle bounced back from back-to-back defeats at the start of the season to win four games on the bounce in all competitions.

They were defeated by Fulham and Huddersfield Town in their opening two games but wins over Reading, Bristol City and Brighton at the weekend have ensured they have moved up to fourth in the Championship, while a win over Cheltenham Town ensured their passage to the third round of the EFL Cup.

Hayden told the Chronicle: “It hasn’t been a bad start, but it could have been better if we are honest with ourselves.

“At the end of the day, it is what it is, we have the points on the board that we have and we go into the international break now.”

Newcastle will be keen to maintain the momentum they have generated when they return to club action following the international break as they seem to be finding their feet.

But Hayden’s comments suggest that he is hungry for the side to do better, and always seems to be finding room for improvement.

Their response to their disappointments of the opening two games of the season has been pretty strong. They have conceded just one goal since then and have kept three clean sheets in the process; something that will please manager Rafa Benitez.
