Reports in the press this morning indicated that Arsenal may try to sign Manchester City’s ‘Supersub’.
Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko is to be subject from a bid from Arsenal in the January transfer window according to a report in this morning’s Daily Mirror.
There has been a lot said about Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season as they are top of the table with a two point cushion over the chasing pack.
One of those factors has been if striker Olivier Giroud were to get injured then the lack of quality from their front man could be a major factor if they were to fall short of claiming their first title in ten years.
There are a few more issues here, with Dzeko said to be unhappy at not starting regularly at City, would Arsene Wenger be signing the 27-year-old for him to be his main striker, if so where does this leave Giroud? Or will there be a change of system?
For the past couple of seasons at City, Dzeko has earned the tag of ‘supersub’ for his interventions in front of goal after coming off the bench.
They have often been important goals for City – usually late winners or equalisers.
There is also the likelihood of City selling to a rival for the title. Is that really likely? Whilst City have two dangerous goalscorers in Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero spearheading their attack, they know what Dzeko can offer to any team. In his first full season in the Premier League he scored 14 leagues goals – ten of them in the second half of games which has contributed to his supersub tag.
Anyone who has that impact could certainly help Arsenal, it would also give the side depth and it would probably show the exit door to Nicklas Bendtner in the politest way possible.
Dzeko could easily settle into Arsenal’s style. Although there have been times when he can trip over himself and somehow miss chances which look easier to score than miss, his ability to hold the ball up and be a threat around the area is a good asset. He’d also give the side an option to mix it up if their Plan A hadn’t worked.
Is it likely to happen? Probably not, mainly because they’re title rivals, and Dzeko may want assurance that the chances are he will start a lot of games.
