Arsenal have been linked with a move for Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko in the January transfer window – with a report in the Sunday Times indicating that Arsene Wenger is willing to part with £15 million to secure his services.
There is a lot of quality in the Arsenal midfield but many critics have suggested it was an area of the park that needed addressing in the summer, but wasn’t. Given the injuries that the Gunners have suffered in that area of the team this season, it has only added weight to the argument of those critics.
If Sissoko were to sign for Arsenal, what would he offer that the current midfielders don’t? Here is a look at some statistics:
| Position | Team | Total Attempted assists per game | Tackles Accuracy | Passing Accuracy | Beating a Player % | Total Scoring Attempts per game | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Santiago Cazorla | MF | Arsenal | 2 | 85% | 89% | 62.5 | 2.83 | 12 | 872 |
| Aaron Ramsey | MF | Arsenal | 1.92 | 68% | 86% | 22.58 | 2.5 | 12 | 785 |
| Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain | MF | Arsenal | 1.54 | 100% | 80% | 56.52 | 1.54 | 13 | 750 |
| Moussa Sissoko | MF | Newcastle | 1.23 | 64% | 79% | 38.81 | 0.92 | 13 | 1,155 |
| Jack Wilshere | MF | Arsenal | 0.78 | 100% | 83% | 40.91 | 1.11 | 9 | 526 |
| Mikel Arteta | MF | Arsenal | 0.43 | 82% | 94% | 0 | 0.29 | 7 | 450 |
| Mathieu Flamini | MF | Arsenal | 0.4 | 75% | 93% | 66.67 | 0.4 | 10 | 833 |
If you look at the statistics, Sissoko is lower than every central minded midfielder in terms of accurate passes and when it comes to winning tackles. If Arsenal are going to buy another midfielder, they would need a proficient tackler in the middle of the park, and someone who can find his man easily – in keeping with the style of player undertaken by the Gunners.
He also has a pretty low percentage when it comes to beating a player, and one would ask if that is really the kind of midfielder Arsenal need at this time? Do they not need someone with a degree more power who can beat his opponent with relative ease and win the battles in the middle of the park, as well as being able to drive the team on?
Other than the defensive midfielders that Arsenal have, Sissoko also has the lowest amount of shots on goal during a game. It is difficult to see what he would offer Arsene Wenger’s side, and how he would improve them other than just strengthening the numbers based on these figures.
