The former Tottenham star admits he has a weakness to his game as he returns from suspension against Manchester United this weekend.
Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson explained that he may have picked up his first red card of his career against Blackburn Rovers because he isn’t the best tackler.
The Icelandic international returns to the Swansea side this weekend when they take on Manchester United, with Sigurdsson hoping to have the same impact as in the reverse fixture, where he scored the winning goal during their opening day win at Old Trafford.
He told the South Wales Evening Post: “It’s the first red card of my career and touch wood it’s the last.
“I felt I was unlucky to get sent off. I caught him from the side with the inside of my foot, but the ref obviously decided that I’d lost the ball and lost my head a little bit.
“That wasn’t the case — it’s just that I am not the best tackler!
“Of course I was frustrated that we were losing to Blackburn, but I was just a bit late after he had passed the ball.”
| Tackles Accuracy | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leon Britton | 92% | 7 | 455 |
| Nathan Dyer | 87% | 22 | 1,418 |
| Wayne Routledge | 83% | 21 | 1,634 |
| Jefferson Montero | 81% | 19 | 1,010 |
| Ki Sung-yueng | 80% | 22 | 1,908 |
| Tom Carroll | 71% | 12 | 631 |
| Jonjo Shelvey | 70% | 19 | 1,416 |
| Gylfi Sigurdsson | 61% | 21 | 1,766 |
The figures in this table seem to back up Sigurdsson’s claim for within the Swansea team as he is bottom of the list of the percentage of tackles won of all of their midfielders at the club.
But it’s for his work at the top end of the field where his ability is best suited. He brings a lot of end product to the side in the form of goals, craft and assists in the final third, and is also handy when it comes to set pieces.
However, it is healthy for a player to know his weaknesses and it is perhaps a part of his game that Sigurdsson will look to work on going forward in order to become a better player.
