Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum said the Reds did more good than bad in their 0-0 draw with Southampton, which ultimately saw them surrender top spot over the weekend, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The Reds were frustrated after spurning a couple of opportunities at St Mary’s and as a result they now sit in second place, a point behind Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Wijnaldum, who started the game in the absence of the injured Adam Lallana, said manager Jurgen Klopp tried to keep things positive following the display.

The Dutchman is quoted in the Liverpool Echo, saying: “It was one of those days. You can have days like this but I don’t want to see it as a negative. We did a lot of things well, a few things wrong, but if you look at the game we did more good than bad.

“We are only disappointed about the result because we created a lot of chances and didn’t score – not the performance.”

A couple of fine saves from Fraser Forster, along with two opportunities spurned by Roberto Firmino and Nathaniel Clyne, meant Liverpool left St Mary’s without maximum points.

Wijnaldum set up Liverpool’s best opportunity in the first half which saw Sadio Mane denied by Forster, and helped create the space which allowed him to break beyond the last line, only for the excellent Virgil van Dijk to deny him with a block before the break.

Despite being the leading scorers in the Premier League, Liverpool are bound to have days when it does not all come together.

Another couple of positives for the side to consider was how well they defended on the south coast, and that they came away from the place with more to show for their efforts than they did the previous season. Now they just need to find their scoring touch in the next couple of games and bounce back with a string of wins.
