Wijnaldum signed from Newcastle in the summer on the back of a season that saw him score 11 goals in the Premier League.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has spoken to the club’s official website about his desire to contribute more in the final third for the Reds and find the net for the first time in his Anfield career.

Wijnaldum made the switch to Merseyside from Newcastle United in the summer. Despite the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship, the Dutchman managed to find the net 11 times in the Premier League, with many viewing Jurgen Klopp’s decision to bring him to Anfield as partly down to the player’s goal-scoring capabilities.

Although he may not have found the net for the Reds just yet, he has provided he assist for both of Adam Lallana’s goals this campaign – which suggests he is having some kind of impact in the final third – but it is clear he would like to find the net himself.

He told the club’s official website: “You’re going to have a hunger to score goals and you’re going to be greedy to score goals. That’s what I am right now.

“But the most important thing is how can I help the team? If that’s with assists then so be it. Of course I want to score, because I did it for a lot of years in a lot of teams and it’s something I can do.

“I’m searching for goals because if you get used to scoring goals, you’re going to have a hunger and be greedy to score goals from midfield.

“This couple of games it was with assists, but I’m relaxed and easy, I have faith in my qualities and I know goals will come. But the team is the most important thing and if we win games, it’s OK for me.”

Liverpool have shown they have plenty of goal-scoring quality already this season having put four past both Leicester City and Arsenal, while they brushed aside Burton Albion in a 5-0 win in the EFL Cup.

It is clear that he was brought to the club with goals in mind. Liverpool want to have a scoring threat from as many areas of the pitch as possible. If Wijnaldum can contribute as many goals as he did for Newcastle last season that would be a pretty good return.

He does seem to be a big part of the Reds’ midfield set-up at this early stage of the season by providing some presence and willingness to get in the opposition’s penalty area as Liverpool play on the front foot.

There are several midfield options available at the club and it could be a big job for Wijnaldum to hold down his place in the side. Scoring and providing goals would go a long way to helping his cause.
