Everton midfielder Gareth Barry is pleased with the club’s start to the season and suggests the side needs to aim for European qualification at the very least this season.
The Toffees have got off to a pretty strong start by picking up seven points from their opening three games and progressing to the third round of the EFL Cup.
Barry is quoted in the Daily Express, saying: “So seven points from nine, and through to the next round in the League Cup, it’s a great start.
“The club just wants to be playing European football regularly. It’s a huge club and the fans deserve to be seeing European nights every season so there’s no reason why we can’t be targeting those places.”
Everton are very much keen to kick on from the disappointment of the past couple of seasons as they finished in the bottom half of the Premier League under Roberto Martinez, and lost out at the semi-final stage of both cup competitions.
Under Ronald Koeman they will want to achieve more, and the recently appointed Everton boss seems to be making a point of getting his players to work hard in training, while making some changes to the way they train.
There is plenty of talent in the Everton squad and they can be a match for any team in the division on their day, as they showed it at times even last season despite their disappointing campaign.
Playing European football on a regular basis over the next few years will be a tangible sign of progress, especially given how competitive the Premier League has become towards the top in recent years.
