Southampton missed several chances as they let a slender lead slip to Hull City at the weekend.

Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic has said nobody was happy after the Saints’ failure to kill off Hull City’s resistance came back to bite them with a 2-1 defeat at the KCOM Stadium, the Daily Echo reports.

The Saints took an early lead via a Charlie Austin penalty and they had numerous other chances to double their advantage against a side that had lost each of their last six games.

Goals from Robert Snodgrass and Michael Dawson gave the Tigers the win, leaving Tadic and his teammates to rue the chances they spurned.

The Serb is quoted in the Daily Echo, saying: “In the first half we played much better. We should have scored the second goal, but we didn’t.

“We then conceded two cheap goals and that’s it. We gave them that chance to come back into the game.”

Those chances were duly accepted by Mike Phelan’s side, and after the high of beating Inter Milan the previous Thursday in the Europa League, this defeat brings them back down to the ground with something of a bump.

The Saints are currently in 10th place in the Premier League after that result, and missed the opportunity to move into eighth and into contention for the European places at this early stage of the season.

It is bitterly disappointing for the side to go into the international break on the back of consecutive Premier League defeats, although they have managed to place themselves well in Europe.

Southampton have a tough assignment following the international break when they take on the league leaders Liverpool at St Mary’s on 19th November. It will be a challenge but the side will feel they can jump-start their season once again by taking a significant scalp.
