Sunderland have taken just one point from their opening four games and were comprehensively beaten by Everton on Monday night.
Sunderland’s Duncan Watmore has stressed the need for the side to improve quickly after a disappointing start to the season, the Chronicle reports.
The Black Cats have picked up just one point from their opening four games and were battered during a second half spell by Everton on Monday which saw Romelu Lukaku score a hat-trick.
One of the problems for Sunderland in the past few season has been their lack of a fast start, which later needs a fine finish in order to evade the relegation trap door.
Watmore is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: “We needed to start well this season and we haven’t done that in the first couple of games.
“Clearly we need more points. It sounds the same over but we need to turn it around quickly and make sure we get out of this situation that we always seem to find ourselves in.
“We can do that, we are positive. We are only four games in, we are not going to get into that mindset. We need to stay positive.”
They face a tricky assignment at the weekend when they travel to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham Hotspur, but after that there is perhaps some room to generate some momentum. A League Cup tie at QPR follows the trip to Spurs with home games against Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion following on.
From those games, you would expect Sunderland to overcome Championship opposition in the cup, and they come up against sides that have had indifferent starts to the season, where you feel they need to pick up a decent amount of points to relieve some of the pressure on the side; otherwise more and more people will swiftly be talking about a potential relegation battle.
