Liverpool forward Divock Origi has admitted to the club’s official website that it took him a little while to find his rhythm in the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup.

Origi ended up tormenting his opponents as the game went on as he and Daniel Sturridge struck up a very effective partnership.

The Belgian’s pace and power certainly seemed to please the fans as he created a couple of opportunities for Sturridge, while a fine save from Michel Vorm prevented him from getting on the score sheet.

It was just the third start of the season for Origi – having started in the previous two rounds of the competition – but he, along with Sturridge, showed there is a decent amount of depth to the squad.

He told the official Liverpool website: “Of course, it’s been a while since I played 90 minutes so you have to get in the game, but I enjoyed the game.

“As a team, the more the game went on the more we found each other and the more we had the automatism in the group. We tried to help each other and that’s a good thing.

“I think we tried to look for each other and we’re very happy that Daniel scored. He’s a top striker, we created the chances all together and it’s a good thing that we have a lot of options everywhere.”

There was a subtle change in shape from Liverpool last night with the side playing a 4-4-2 diamond for large parts of the game rather than the 4-3-3 that they started the season with.

Sturridge seemed to flourish with Origi alongside him as the pair seemed to have a good understanding that could have easily produced more than two goals last night.

It must be heartening for manager Jurgen Klopp to have both of these options available to him, and there is a chance that neither of Origi nor Sturridge will feature at the weekend.

However, given Origi hobbled off with cramp in the second half, it demonstrates the need for Liverpool to take the cup competitions seriously so Klopp can give different members of his squad as much game time as possible to get that rhythm they need.
