Newcastle United right-back DeAndre Yedlin has said manager Rafa Benitez has told him to be patient as the United States international looks to establish himself in the side.
Yedlin signed this summer from Tottenham on a permanent deal following a season-long loan spell at Sunderland last term and made his Newcastle bow as a late substitute in the 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend.
He is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: “It gives you some confidence knowing that a manager of Rafa Benitez’s calibre wants you on his team.
“Hopefully, I can do great things here. The biggest thing he told me was to be patient and work my way into the team.
“I want to learn as much as I can every day. My time here will come.”
Given there are so many games for the Magpies this season, Yedlin will undoubtedly get opportunities to impress everyone connected with the club.
Vurnon Anita featured in the right-back role on Saturday evening, as he did on several occasions towards the end of last season, which shows that Yedlin has joined a side that not only has depth in terms of numbers, but with versatile players at the club as well, meaning that competition for places is fierce.
In his comments, he placed a great degree of emphasis on learning. He is a bright talent but the 23-year-old can still learn a lot, especially from a manager with the experience and pedigree the current Newcastle manager has.
