Denayer played in midfield during Sunderland’s 3-0 win over Hull City at the weekend.
Sunderland manager David Moyes was impressed with the contribution of Jason Denayer during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Hull City after his display in midfield, the Chronicle reports.
Denayer – who can play across the back line – was played in a role more advanced than he is perhaps accustomed to with Lee Cattermole, Jack Rodwell and Jan Kirchhoff have all been sidelined, although the latter of the trio recently returned for the under-23 side.
Moyes is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: “We have been waiting to see what Jason can do, he has been a little bit of a slow burner to start with.
“I thought Jason did quite well, in a position that sometimes goes unnoticed. But he’s very quick and I thought he recovered things and got back with people. We’ve been needing a bit of speed.”
Moyes, however, confirmed that Denayer could be adding to his injury woes having felt his hamstring in the latter stages of Saturday’s win over the Tigers, meaning he is a doubt for Saturdays trip to Anfield to take on second-place Liverpool.
Despite the fact he may be injured, it s a positive for Moyes that he knows that Denayer can perform that role to what he sees as a high standard, especially when he has got several other absentees. Having players who can occupy a variety of roles is welcome.
What Moyes will be after from Denayer from whenever he next features for the side is consistency so Sunderland can continue to climb the table.
The Black Cats have won their last two games to put them within touching distance of lifting themselves out of the bottom three, and some consistently good performances from here on in is what is going to be required if they are to secure their safety once again.
