David Moyes explains how many more wins he thinks Sunderland need to survive

Moyes is targeting 10 wins overall as he looks to keep Sunderland in the top flight.

Sunderland manager David Moyes feels that six more wins could be enough to see the side secure their Premier League status once again, the Chronicle reports.

The Black Cats have experienced an upturn in their fortunes of late after starting the season with 10 games without a victory, but they have managed to win four of their last seven to move within a point of safety.

Moyes feels that a total of 10 wins should be enough for the club to survive once again, and is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: “In my head I know that we roughly need to win 10 games this season in order to have a chance of staying up.

“We might need more than that, who knows?

“Going into Christmas I knew we needed to be as close to five wins as possible and going into the New Year I would like to be as close to that tally if possible.”

Their recent run of form should give the Black Cats plenty of confidence that another win could come over the festive period, but they do face a difficult run of games.

Moyes takes his side to former club Manchester United on Boxing Day before travelling to Burnley on New Years’ Eve which marks the halfway stage of the season.

Their first game of 2017 sees them welcome a Liverpool side in the thick of the Premier League title race on 2 January.

Sunderland are currently on 14 points from 17 games this season and another win in one of their next few games could would certainly make their position that little bit healthier.

10 wins gives the side 30 points, but Sunderland will need more than the two draws they have also picked up this season in order to get as close to the 40-point mark as possible – a total which many see as safety.

Sunderland managed to get to 39 points last term, and it is a real positive that they have managed to find ways to win matches. But picking up a couple of draws in their next few games would not be bad results on the face of things; it would keep the points tally ticking over during a tricky looking run.

Moyes’ wins total might well be enough for the side to secure their position in the top flight once again, as long as they get a few draws to go with it.
