John W Henry may have made the trip over the Atlantic Ocean at the right time.
With Liverpool going strongly in the Premier League ahead of the fixture against Aston Villa at the weekend, principal owner John W. Henry probably couldn’t believe his eyes during the first half as the visitors came to Anfield and completely outplayed the Reds.
However, in the long-term he probably couldn’t have timed the move better.
Whilst Henry will inevitably be keeping track of Liverpool, seeing the Reds comprehensively outplayed in the first 45 minutes of the 2-2 draw will surely have sent alarm bells ringing.
As much quality as Liverpool possess in the final third, notably from Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, there were some gaping holes in the side.
One was in the middle of the park – and with Lucas Leiva set for a spell on the sidelines – Henry may be prepared to put his hand in his pocket to make sure to secure a midfielder should Brendan Rodgers wish to bring one in.
The other was at left-back. It is fair to say that Aly Cissokho’s loan move to Anfield hasn’t worked out in the way the club would like so far – showing how frail the left flank of the defence looks without Jose Enrique. He is also a player that Rodgers wouldn’t play there if all of his other options were fit.
There are of course other areas, some suggesting that Liverpool need a winger, hence the interest in Mohamed Salah.
If Liverpool are to achieve their goal of qualifying for the Champions League, and staying there in the long-term, Henry may be well advised to do everything he can to support Rodgers in this window and instead of trying to bring in one or two faces, they should aim for more.
