After missing out on the title last season, have Tottenham Hotspur started this season stronger?
It is hard to know what to make of Tottenham Hotspur’s start. In August the target was to certainly kick on from their title challenge of the season before, with the hope of a happier ending.
This season there have been signs they may do that, and their defence has looked the most solid in the Premier League, but a recent run of draws means they have slipped back in the title race with a five-point deficit after 11 games.
How does their points tally compare to the same stage of last season?
Tottenham after 11 games 2015/16:
| Points | Goals | Goals Conceded | Clean Sheet | Appearances | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tottenham | 20 | 19 | 9 | 4 | 11 |
Tottenham after 11 games 2016/17:
| Points | Goals | Goals Conceded | Clean Sheet | Appearances | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tottenham | 21 | 15 | 6 | 5 | 11 |
As was the case at the start of last season, Tottenham picked up several early draws, but this time out they are a point better off given their unbeaten record.
It seems to be something of a theme for Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham to have a run of draws earlier on in the season. What Spurs fans will hope follows is a really good run of wins that puts them in the title picture yet again.

At the back they seem to be more solid with fewer goals conceded and an extra clean sheet to their name. Tottenham’s struggle for goals lately seems to be down to the recent absence of Harry Kane. They did find the net a little more in the first 11 games last season, but it took him a little while to find his scoring touch for his club during last season before his form really caught fire.
Although they may be fifth and a little off the pace in the title race than they would like to be considering they looked a real threat following the win over Manchester City, Spurs are still handily placed to at least qualify for the Champions League once again from here, and if they string a significant number of wins together they will more than likely be in the title picture.
