Michael Carrick believes Manchester United have not had the results their performances deserve

The Manchester United midfielder believes his side will have a say in this season’s title race.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has told Sky Sports that he does not believe the side has had the results their performances have warranted so far this season.

United currently sit in sixth place in the Premier League – eight points off the top of the table and six points off the Champions League places.

After what was initially a promising start to the season, where Jose Mourinho’s side managed to string three consecutive wins together, United have not won league games back-to-back since, winning just two of their last seven games in the process.

Carrick told Sky Sports that he is confident the side can still have a say in the title race, saying: “We want to be at the top challenging. We’ve had some ups and downs along the way, it’s not to say that we’ve given up on winning things just yet – it’s too early for that and we’ve got too much quality and too much of a good team and squad to give up on anything.

“We just don’t feel we’ve got the results our performances have warranted; we know it can change, we’re not up to Christmas yet, there’s still so much to play for and we still believe that when it comes near the end and when it counts we’ll be right up there.”

There is, of course, a long way to go this season given that everyone has played just 11 games so far. Nevertheless, it does show that United have suffered from their inconsistencies at the start of this campaign. However with the talent they have in the squad it is hard to think that they will not be a force whenever they start to click.

There is plenty of time for United to recover their position and get into the thick of the title picture, but it could be a tough task, not just because of the eight-point gap at the top, but because there are several teams in between.

This weekend’s game against Arsenal is a big one for both sides, but one where United might fancy their chances to make up some ground on one of their rivals ahead of them given Mourinho’s record against Arsene Wenger’s side in the Premier League – a manager he has yet to record a loss against.
