Perez scored twice and provided an assist as Newcastle United beat Ipswich 3-0 in the Championship at the weekend.
Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez is hoping there are more goals to come after he scored twice, and provided an assist, in the Magpies’ 3-0 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday, the Chronicle reports.
Perez relieved the goal-scoring burden a little from Dwight Gayle – who has been the side’s main outlet for goals this season having found the net 11 times already in the Championship – but Perez stepped up to find the net after just a minute to send the league leaders on their way to another win.
The forward seems to be growing in confidence, and is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: “Hopefully, there are more goals to come. I’m confident. My confidence is growing step by step.
“It’s important to me. I’m really pleased to be able to score and give the team the lead.
“It’s always really nice to score for Newcastle, but the most important thing is the three points.”
They were Perez’s fourth and fifth goals in all competitions, and it must be something of a relief for manager Rafa Benitez that his side are capable of winning comfortably with other members of the team finding the net, instead of relying on Gayle week after week.
Everyone associated with the club will hope this is a start of a decent scoring run for Perez, but he will have to improve markedly on the ratio that has seen him score 18 goals from 88 appearances for the club. It is a long season and everyone needs to chip in and do their bit.
After 14 games, Newcastle are currently three points clear at the top of the Championship, with their attentions turning to the last-16 of the EFL Cup, when they take on Preston North End at home tomorrow night.
