Newcastle United defender Achraf Lazaar has told the Chronicle that he joined one of the top seven clubs in the country when he signed for the Magpies.
Lazaar made the move from Palermo in the summer and has made just two appearance for Newcastle so far this season.
Despite Newcastle’s current standing – as they try to get themselves back into the top flight at the first time of asking – Lazaar certainly thinks he has joined one of English football’s top clubs.
He told the Chronicle: “For me, this is one of the most important clubs in England, in the top seven in the country. That’s why I came here.
“I signed here because it’s my dream to play for a big club in England. I need to stick with my dream.
“I will give my all for this team and I hope to give the fans 100% and show how good I am.”
It demonstrates that Newcastle can still have some pulling power, even if they are in the second tier of English football. While Newcastle may not have had the success of other sides down the years, they still have a decent standing, partly down to the numbers they attract to their home games every week.
Lazaar did mention he was joining a ‘good team with an excellent manager’. Someone of the pedigree of Rafa Benitez is bound to help a side that has dropped down a division to attract players, and the player himself seems to be patient when it comes to trying to get his chance to establish himself in the first team.
There are still a lot of games to be played this season and Lazaar is likely to get many more chances than he has done already.
