Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino recently downplayed the importance of winning a cup competition.

Ian Wright suggested on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 live on Monday evening (8:22pm, February 11, 2019) why Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has publicly played down the importance of cup competitions for the club.

Tottenham have already been knocked out of the FA Cup this season, and the North London outfit have also failed to progress to the final of the EFL Cup.

Spurs, though, are in the Champions League knockout rounds, and Pochettino’s side are also challenging for the Premier League title.

Last month, Pochettino played down the importance of Tottenham not winning a cup competition, as quoted on Skysports.com.

With Tottenham having not won a major silverware for some time, it was quite controversial of Pochettino to make such comments.

Arsenal legend Wright believes that Pochettino made those remarks in order to take the pressure off of his players.

Wright said on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 live on Monday evening (8:22pm, February 11, 2019): “Maybe Pochettino is saying that because he knows he is at a club with players where everybody’s still putting the marker on him like ‘Yeah, but they haven’t won anything’.

“He is constantly taking the pressure off of his players. He is always trying to find a way to make it okay for his players.”

Praise for Harry Winks

Meanwhile, former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp has outlined the difference he has noticed in Spurs ace Harry Winks.

The 23-year-old England international midfielder has established himself as an important player for the North London outfit this season.

According to WhoScored, Winks has made 15 starts and eight substitute appearances in the Premier League for Spurs so far this season, scoring one goal in the process.

Redknapp said about Winks on Sky Sports Premier League this past Sunday afternoon (1:15pm, February 10, 2019) in the build-up of the Premier League match between Tottenham and Leicester City: “I have noticed a subtle change. I have seen the last few Spurs games live, and he has definitely taken the game by the scruff of the neck in terms of at times driving with the ball.”
