Pundit says Tottenham Hotspur must hold onto Toby Alderweireld.

BT Sport pundit Ian Wright looks on prior to the Emirates FA Cup Semi-Final match between Arsenal and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on April 23, 2017 in London, England.

Pundit Ian Wright has warned Tottenham that they must do everything they can to hold onto Toby Alderweireld.

Alderweireld made his return to action for Spurs last night against Brighton, playing his first club game since featuring against Rochdale in the FA Cup in February.

The Belgian’s future is in question with The Times claiming Spurs will sell him this summer as doubts continue over his new contract.

Spurs sold key first team player Kyle Walker to Manchester City a year ago, and he has instantly found success, winning his first Premier League title.

Ian Wright, speaking to SkySports on The Debate (17/4 10pm), said it is essential that Spurs put their foot down and keep hold of him.

He said: “It’s sad if Spurs are losing a player like that. Toby Alderweireld could go to any club in the top four.

“He’s the type of player they have got to be keeping, if they are going to challenge City.”

Toby Alderweireld #4 of Tottenham Hotspur passes the ball in the second half against Roma during the International Champions Cup on July 25, 2017 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

Tottenham are 19 points behind Manchester City and have played a game more.

Selling Alderweireld to a top four rival would be a disastrous move, but even selling him abroad would leave them worse off.

Davinson Sanchez has been excellent this season but he has also shown moments of naivety and was poor against City at the weekend.

If any game was going to convince Spurs to offer him the salary he wants, that 4-1 defeat was it.
