Newcastle United were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at Anfield yesterday.

BT Sport pundit Ian Wright looks on prior to the Emirates FA Cup Semi-Final match between Arsenal and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on April 23, 2017 in London, England.

Ian Wright has told Match of the Day, which was broadcast on BBC One on 3rd March, that Newcastle United need to start committing more numbers forward.

Newcastle have been criticised at times for being too defensive, and their compact style was once again on display at Anfield.

Even with Newcastle 2-0 down against Liverpool, Rafael Benitez appeared afraid to take the hand-break off his side.

And Wright believes that Newcastle need to start showing more attacking intent.

“I don’t think they have the players. They need more creativity,” he said. “They need Jonjo Shelvey back. But they need to get more people forward, it’s as simple as that.”

Newcastle just could not pose much of a threat to Liverpool, and while their performance showed good organisation, they never looked like getting anything out of the contest.

Liverpool took the lead in the first half through Mo Salah, and then added a second when Sadio Mane finished well.

Newcastle will have easier opponents to come up against in the coming weeks, when Benitez will surely show more intent to win the match.

Newcastle are currently in 16th place, and sit just two points above the relegation zone, with Benitez’s side now looking nervously over their shoulder.
