Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane limped out of their FA Cup tie with Millwall due to an injury.
Tottenham’s Harry Kane goes off injured
Ian Wright has told The Sun that he is not convinced that Vincent Janssen will be able to step up for however long Tottenham have to cope without Harry Kane for following the ankle injury he sustained at the weekend.
Kane lasted just 10 minutes of Spurs’ FA Cup tie with Millwall on Sunday as he rolled his ankle, and Sky Sports reports that it remains unclear how long he will be out for with a scan yet to take place due to the swelling not going down.
And while Tottenham put six past the League One side to set up a semi-final with Chelsea – with Heung-min Son scoring a hat-trick and Vincent Janssen scoring his first from open play since his summer move to White Hart Lane – Wright has suggested that Mauricio Pochettino does not have the players to fill the void.
“The big problem facing Spurs now is who is going to come in because the obvious choice — Vincent Janssen — has fallen well short so far,” he told The Sun.
“When Kane went off he was the natural replacement but instead Mauricio Pochettino turned to Christian Eriksen and — not for the first time — he was left on the bench.
Tottenham’s Vincent Janssen (R) celebrates scoring their fifth goal with team mates
“I know Janssen took his goal well when he finally got on, and the way the team celebrated with him, they’re desperate for him to succeed.
“But is he going to get the four, five or six goals you need when Kane is out? I’m sorry, but from the evidence so far, I just don’t see that happening.”
There is no question that Spurs will miss Kane for however long he is sidelined for – he has scored 19 times in just 22 Premier League games this term – but writing off his teammates may be a mistake.
Tottenham’s Son Heung-min celebrates scoring their second goal with Christian Eriksen, Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies
Janssen would have surely taken a tremendous amount of belief from the goal and the reaction from the players and fans inside the ground, while Son has a decent record in the top flight this term, having scored seven in 23 games, of which he has started just 14.
Meanwhile, the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen will surely want to add to their own individual tallies over the coming weeks.
And with the international break on the horizon and none of the top nine to play in the league until the North London derby at the end of April, it would not be a surprise if Tottenham find a way to cope while Kane is missing.
