Ian Wright tells David Moyes exactly how he can get West Ham fans onside starting at Watford

It is fair to say West Ham United fans have been underwhelmed by the appointment of new boss David Moyes.

Slaven Bilic was sacked on Monday after a 4-1 defeat to Liverpool left West Ham languishing in the Premier League relegation zone.

Just two wins from the first 11 games ultimately did for Bilic and on Tuesday co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold replaced the Croatian with David Moyes.

The appointment has not gone down well with Hammers fans who feel it lacks the kind of ambition promised when the club left their beloved Boleyn Ground for the London Stadium last summer.

Indeed many supporters and pundits feel the appointment of Moyes, who took Sunderland down to the Championship in his last role, could even worsen West Ham’s predicament.

BT Sport pundit Ian Wright looks on prior to the Emirates FA Cup Semi-Final match between Arsenal and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on April 23, 2017 in London, England.

But speaking as a guest on Sky Sports’ The Debate, former Hammers striker Ian Wright told Moyes how he can get sceptical supporters onside, starting at Watford next time out.

“For me, if you’re going to sign someone like (Javier) Chicharito Hernandez, you have to be getting the ball in the box,” Wright told The Debate.

“All his goals in the Premier League have been in the box. If Andy Carroll’s fit and you can keep him fit then get the ball in the box to him and get people playing from there. I think they’ve got to simplify it, get it that simple.

“Play them both up front, they’ve got to go more direct, (playing those two up front) will get the fans onside, the fans will be happy with that, get the fans going, get people on second balls, keep them in there, Michail Antonio’s got a goal in him as well you know, get those players backing up, getting the second ball and putting teams under pressure.”

Moyes is certainly going to have to hit the ground running with the game against Watford followed by Leicester at home and a trip to his old club Everton before a run of incredibly tough fixtures against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Failure to pick up points in his first three games would see the Hammers facing a season-long battle against the drop and would thrust Moyes under intense pressure from the off.
