Steven Gerrard looks set to head to Ibrox as the new Rangers manager.

BT Sport pundit Ian Wright looks on prior to the Emirates FA Cup Semi-Final match between Arsenal and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on April 23, 2017 in London, England.

Pundit Ian Wright has told Sky Sports’ The Debate that he thinks the Rangers job is ‘perfect’ for Steven Gerrard – as long as he can get his message over to his players at Ibrox.

The Gers suffered complete embarrassment at the hands of Old Firm rivals Celtic for the second time in two weeks on Sunday, as after losing 4-0 to the Bhoys in the Scottish Cup semi-final, Brendan Rodgers’ men won 5-0 at Celtic Park.

The fallout from the game has not been pretty for Rangers. The gulf between themselves and their Glasgow rivals is huge, and interim boss Graeme Murty was removed from the role on Tuesday.

The attention now turns to finally finding a permanent manager, given that Pedro Caixinha was sacked back in October, and there appears to be just one name in the frame right now.

Liverpool legend and under-18 coach Steven Gerrard has emerged as the clear favourite for the job, and told BT Sport on Tuesday night that he has held talks over a move to Ibrox, with more negotiations to come this week.

Gerrard appears to be closing in on the Rangers job, and whilst many believe it could be a recipe for disaster, pundit Ian Wright has told Sky Sports’ The Debate that he thinks the move is actually ‘perfect’.

Wright suggested that the only problem may be if he can’t get his ideas over as a young, inexperienced coach, but did suggest that Liverpool may simply be ‘loaning him out’ to Rangers to groom him as a Jurgen Klopp replacement.

“With Steven being the personality that he is, wherever he goes, he is going to have that focus on him so you might as well go somewhere like Rangers where their aim is to get closer to Celtic,” said Wright. “The only problem Steven will have is if he starts losing to the other teams, he can’t get his message over or they aren’t playing well enough. I don’t think that will happen if he surrounds himself with the right people.”

“If they are going to back him and give him exactly what he wants, it’s perfect because it’s a magnificent club and they are way behind Celtic, so anything he can do to progress and get them closer is going to be a success for him. The pressure in Scotland is very crystallised and what it will do is get him ready for whatever may come in the future for him. It’s almost as if Liverpool are loaning him out. For him to have the opportunity to have a job of that stature and that size, I think it’s perfect,” he added.
