Tottenham will be licking their wounds after a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the north London derby on Sunday.
Ange Postecoglou’s side went into the match having made a mixed start to the new campaign, including losing to Newcastle United last time out.
As a result, the Tottenham players knew that even more pressure was on them, especially given that their neighbours had won in their home ground in back-to-back seasons.
Yet, by the full-time whistle, Spurs fans were deflated because it was another defeat and the same problems rearing its ugly head.
Guglielmo Vicario has come under fire again for how he is still dealing with corners, with Ian Wright having his focus on another player rather than the out-of-sorts shot-stopper.
Gabriel Magalhaes scored the winning goal for Arsenal via Tottenham’s kryptonite, which is corners, with the Brazil star having a free header from just yards out.
The Gunners have one of the best set-piece records in the Premier League and are probably the best at scoring from corners.
Wright touched upon how they have scored 42 set-piece goals since they appointed a set-piece coach – Nicolas Jover – in 2021.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do the basics, from a defensive aspect, and that’s why Wright was shocked by Cristian Romero‘s defending and marking, as he told Premier League Productions (15/09/24 at 4:10 pm).
Cristian Romero under fire
“Since he has come in, the set-piece coach, we have scored 42 goals, since 2021,” said Wright.
“The delivery is fantastic. The movement from him (Gabriel). I am very surprised with Romero. It feels very easy for a defender of his calibre to be moved out like that. I thought it could have been a foul, but not enough maybe.
“That just seems very simple. It’s a very, very easy goal for Arsenal to score.”

Cristian Romero’s poor start to the new season
Romero is a World Cup winner, and when he plays for Argentina, he is out of this world and plays out of his skin.
He showcases that same desire in Spurs colours, but the issue is that his performances have been very poor, especially at the start of the new Premier League campaign.

Romero was under fire against Newcastle before the international break and you could say the same for the opening-day draw at Leicester City – he was at fault for the goals.
Tottenham fell off when injuries hit their squad last season and you fear if anything happens again, then they are in trouble, added to the fact that they are playing in Europe.
