Tottenham Hotspur beat Swansea City 3-1 on Wednesday evening.
Tottenham’s Son Heung-min celebrates scoring their second goal with team mates
Pundit Ian Wright has told Match of the Day (05/04/2017) that he is ‘jealous’ of the fight and determination shown by Tottenham against Swansea City on Wednesday evening.
Tottenham made the trip to South Wales just days after beating Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor, with many expecting them to pick up another victory in their pursuit of Premier League leaders Chelsea.
However, ex-Spurs winger Wayne Routledge came back to haunt his former club as he converted from close range after great work on the byline by Jordan Ayew, leaving Tottenham with work to do.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino attempted to inject life into his side by bringing on Vincent Janssen and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, and with time running out, Dele Alli appeared to have rescued a point with a close range finish from Christian Eriksen’s deflected strike.
Tottenham got so much more than a point though, as Son Heung-min latched on to Janssen’s pass to make it 2-1 in the 91st minute, and Eriksen sealed all three points in the 94th minute with a fine finish from the edge of the box.
With three goals in six minutes, Tottenham produced a stunning late show to obliterate Swansea and keep the pressure on Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table, whilst moving five points clear of third-placed Liverpool.
After the final whistle, pundit Ian Wright told Match of the Day that he finds it ‘very tough’ to see fight and determination from this Tottenham side, admitting he is jealous of Spurs for those reasons, with his beloved Arsenal failing to show such attributes.
BT Sport’s Ian Wright before the match
Wright hailed Tottenham for not giving up despite being 1-0 down with just two minutes of normal time to play, before praising Alli for his determination to score the equaliser, noting that this is a fantastic result for Spurs.
“To be honest, there’s a fight and a determination to Spurs now that’s very tough for me,” said Wright. “It’s very enviable, and I’m so jealous of them. They were 1-0 down after 88 minutes, but they just kept going – they did not stop going at them.”
“Dele Alli has nine goals in 12 now, and he’s the only one that, when that ball goes out to Eriksen, he’s on the move, and that’s what you get from players like that – that’s Tottenham’s determination. They just kept going. This is another fantastic result,” he added.
