Ian Wright has told Wrighty’s House Podcast that Wolves players would have said that Diogo Jota is joining Liverpool to ‘sit on the bench’.

When Liverpool decided to knock on Wolves’ door for a player, some would have thought it would have been for the services of an Adama Traore or Raul Jimenez.

But instead, the Premier League champions opted so snap up the ‘pressing monster’, who has surprised many with how he has taken to life on Merseyside.

Wright praised Jota’s forward-thinking mentality and how he has taken the task head on to try and either dethrone or, as he is doing now, being part of Liverpool’s front three.

“You know the thing with it because they bought Jota,” said Wright. “Remember, he’s trying to come in and make an impression. In that front three.

“This is why when you look at it. Firmino is about the safest out of those guys. Yes, Mane will play. Salah will play.

“But what will happen in the squad is that people will say ‘all the best trying to get into there’.

“Wolves players would have probably said ‘he has probably gone there to sit on the bench’. The fact is that he has gone into an environment where he has gone ‘I am going to have to go here, so any opportunity I get I have to take full advantage of it’.”

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

Jota’s form hit such heights that Jurgen Klopp, who had several injuries to his backline, opted to go ultra-attacking and played his summer signing, alongside his regular trio for their draw at Manchester City before the international break.

Liverpool only came out of that match with a point, but they looked imposing, especially in the first half when the game was being played at the speed of light.

Every time Jota gets a sniff of the ball in the penalty area, he is off the mark like a flash and putting the ball into the back of the net before the opposition defender can even see the name on the back of his shirt.
