Ian Wright has shared that he was ‘very confused’ by Ben White’s defending during Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Saturday, as he told Premier League Productions (16/04/22 at 3:55 pm).

Whilst Arsenal players are struggling to finish their dinner in front of the opposition’s goal, Southampton’s hard-hitting centre-back, Jan Bednarek, was devouring the one chance he got yesterday.

It proved to be the only goal of the game at St Mary’s, with the South Coast side putting that 6-0 drubbing to Chelsea last time out behind them.

As for Mikel Arteta, his Arsenal players are tumbling down the top-four mountain with no safety equipment on because they have now lost three matches in a row.

A number of weeks ago, the race to secure Champions League football was well and truly in their hands, but they have now handed the keys to their bitter rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, even though they lost the early kick-off to Brighton.

Nonetheless, this is what Wright made of the goal Arsenal conceded against Southampton.

“He (Bednarek) does well,” said Wright. “I am very confused as to what Ben White is doing there.

“I think somebody has to get out to Bednarek. No-one gets out to him and he’s finished it well.”

It’s all going wrong at the wrong time for Arteta and his players, who now have two of their toughest games of the season coming up.

Defeats against Crystal Palace, Brighton and now Southampton have well and truly knocked the stuffing out of them.

But perhaps Arsenal need games where they aren’t going to be considered the favourites, like against Chelsea in midweek.

The only issue for the Gunners is that they may just be facing a Chelsea side coming into that Premier League match full of confidence because they do have an FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace to deal with first.
