Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been speaking about Arsenal and their chances of finishing in the top four.

The Gunners are in a great position to make a charge for a place in next season’s Champions League, but despite the Gunners’ prominent league position and good form, Wright isn’t expecting his team to secure a top-four finish.

Indeed, while Wright says he would be ecstatic if Arsenal could finish fourth, he’s not applying any pressure, claiming that the most important thing is that the Gunners are heading in the right direction.

What’s been said?

Wright gave his view on the race for Europe.

“I’m not going to be the person who is going to say ‘oh Arsenal should be fourth.’ If they get fourth I would be ecstatic, but Arsenal are on the right track and that’s why you won’t hear me saying Arsenal are going to finish fourth, not just because I don’t want to put the pressure on, but because Manchester United could click into their gear, because of their personnel, and with Arsenal, we couldn’t finish off Burnley and Manchester United have so many match-winners, so that’s why I say that,” Wright said.

Long-term goal

Arsenal may finish in the top four this season, but even if they don’t this can be considered a successful campaign.

As Wright says, it’s all about moving in the right direction, and Arsenal certainly have this term. They’ve refined their squad, improved their players and found a style of play that works for them.

Arsenal may not achieve a top four finish this season, but after another year of development, they may be in a good position to challenge for major trophies next term.
