Ian Wright has claimed that Tottenham transfer target, Romelu Lukaku, has now become a ‘massive problem’ for Chelsea, as he told the Kelly & Wrighty Show on Premier League Productions (28/04/22 at 12:35 pm).

After winning the European Cup last season, Chelsea felt that they needed one more jigsaw to their puzzle, so they re-signed Lukaku for close to £100 million (Sky Sports).

The 28-year-old had just won the Serie A title at Inter Milan under the stewardship of now-Spurs boss, Antonio Conte.

But, fast forward to today, and it has gone horribly wrong for the player, who isn’t even starting games for Thomas Tuchel on a regular basis anymore – he has five Premier League goals, three of them came by September.

As Lukaku wonders what on earth has happened to his career, rumours have emerged that if he were to leave Stamford Bridge, then a reunion with Conte at Tottenham would be the ‘most likely’ destination for the player.

Whilst that will sort itself out in the summer, ahead of new possible owners coming into Chelsea, Wright questioned if Tuchel even wanted the Belgian at the club.

“Lukaku, what are you going to do with, you have to say a problem?” asked Wright. “The amount of money they paid for him. The amount of money he is earning. Is that going to be some loan somewhere?

“If the new people (Chelsea’s next owners) come in and say ‘no, no, we are going to clean house and start again’, then bam!. They are going to have to take that hit. That’s a massive problem for Chelsea right now.

“He couldn’t have been signed by Tuchel. It doesn’t make any sense.

“The biggest surprise is when Romelu came out and did his interview. That was the death knell for himself.”

Tottenham and Chelsea don’t do transfer business for a reason, and even with new faces possibly entering the West London boardroom, it will probably stay that way.

Of course, there is no way Spurs are signing Lukaku with Harry Kane leading the line, so these rumours are probably doing the rounds if the Englishman leaves.

Yes, it’s understandable with Conte in the Spurs dugout, he is being linked with a reunion with a player he helped produce the best football of his career.

But it would be an utter shock if Kane heads for the exit door and Lukaku is the man to replace him.

There is probably more chance of Daniel Levy signing a £100 million player.
