Ian Wright thinks 44-year-old has ‘ambitions’ of being Liverpool manager after his comments

Liverpool are sitting top of the Premier League table with nine games to go.

Could the fairy-tale ending be on the cards for Jurgen Klopp? The German is set to leave at the end of the season.

One thing is for sure, Xabi Alonso won’t be the manager after the Spaniard decided to stay at soon-to-be Bundesliga champions, Bayer Leverkusen.

That has now kicked the door wide open again as to who will be the next Liverpool manager because Alonso seemed to be the crowd favourite.

Sources have told HITC Football that Roberto De Zerbi is in contention for the Anfield job.

The Brighton boss recently stated ‘I want to keep my ambition and my motivation’ and ‘If I don’t feel comfortable, I can’t stay anymore’, as posted by Fabrizio Romano.

Ian Wright thinks the 44-year-old is being ‘very honest’ with his comments and he is someone who has ‘ambitions’ to manage a team like the Reds, as he told Premier League Productions (31/03/24 at 1:50 pm).

Before Klopp’s side could avoid a scare against Brighton on Sunday, those comments from De Zerbi were discussed.

“He is very honest, you have to say,” said Wright. “His name being linked in and around with what’s going on at Liverpool.

“Knowing that Brighton, we have seen what they have done with players, they produce players to sell players. You have seen it happen with Potter, so it can happen with their manager as well. 

“He is obviously saying he wants to know what’s going on because if there are links, it’s Liverpool or whoever it could be or a bigger club because he has ambitions, then he wants to know what their plan is going forward because he wants to go again. He has seen it with Brighton. They do give people the opportunity to come, build their reputation and move on, so he knows Brighton do that, so he has to find out what his future is.”

It would have been gut-wrenching for Liverpool fans when they heard of Alonso’s intentions.

He seemed like the perfect fit, at the right time and someone who is now showing serious signs that he is going to go right to the top in the management world.

So who next for the Reds?

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim seems to be the main talking point, with sources telling HITC Football that a deal is being explored.
