Aston Villa striker Wesley got up and running against Everton.
Pundit Ian Wright has told BBC’s Match of the Day (24/08, 23:43) that he was impressed with Aston Villa striker Wesley against Everton.
Villa were looking for a first win of the new season, having opened their return to the Premier League with defeats at Tottenham and against Bournemouth.
Dean Smith was looking for an improvement from many players, and striker Wesley was one of them, having received criticism for his displays in the first two games.
The Brazilian hitman, signed from Club Brugge this summer, hadn’t looked particularly threatening against Spurs and Bournemouth, and pundits had been urging him to improve quickly.
He wasted no time in proving some pundits wrong against Everton, as he latched on to Jota’s first-half pass to slide the ball past Jordan Pickford, scoring the opener.
His hold-up and link-up play was impressive throughout too, and those attributes – coupled with hard work – allowed Anwar El Ghazi to get in and score the second late on, securing a 2-0 win.
Now, pundit Wright has praised Wesley, admitting that he was very impressed with him against Everton and even against Spurs on the opening day, hailing his hold-up play and his physicality – and if a striker as great as Wright is impressed, Villa fans should be too.
“I was very impressed, and I was impressed with him against Tottenham on the first day of the season, he held the ball up well there,” said Wright. “He’s physical, he’s putting it about, he’s linking the play and the Villa boys are getting forward, he did that so well throughout the game,” he added.
