Newcastle United find themselves in a precarious position in the Premier League right now.

BT Sport pundit Ian Wright looks on prior to the Emirates FA Cup Semi-Final match between Arsenal and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on April 23, 2017 in London, England.

Ian Wright has told The Debate on Sky Sports (broadcast on 16th January 2018 from 22:00) that without the takeover going through, he can see Newcastle being relegated from the Premier League this season.

Rafa Benitez’s men currently find themselves in a precarious position in the top flight. The Magpies are three points clear of the bottom three in 15th but crucially, they are yet to kick into life during the January transfer window.

Newcastle have not signed a player this month with speculation surrounding the potential takeover continuing. However, the Telegraph reported on Tuesday that talks between Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley have collapsed, and Wright fears that that may have a hugely negative impact on the club’s survival hopes.

“We’re just hearing about Newcastle and everything’s broken down in respect of what’s going on with the money, the buying. And I feel if they do not get that takeover and they can’t get to spend money, which it doesn’t look like they are, I’m sorry to say that I think Newcastle might go,” he told The Debate when asked who he expects to get relegated.

While Wright is not optimistic, the Telegraph reported that Ashley may now be willing to back Benitez in the market after the talks collapsed, so perhaps there may be a reason to be positive in the short-term despite the long-term uncertainty continuing.

But with the days ticking down, Benitez and his team will surely need to get a move on if he hopes to land any of the main targets that he initially had, especially as they may now be playing catch-up to some of their rivals in the race to land the signatures.
