Ian Wright has praised Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi for his performance against Manchester City in The Sun.

Guendouzi featured for Arsenal in their opening Premier League game of the season against City at home this past weekend.

The 19-year-old midfielder started the match on Sunday evening and played for the entire 90 minutes, as the Gunners lost 2-0.

Arsenal legend Wright was impressed with the performance of Guendouzi, who joined the North London outfit from Lorient in the summer transfer window for a fee reported by Football.London to be worth £7 million.

Wright wrote in The Sun about Guendouzi: “Yes, he found it tough going at times against City but what impressed me was his attitude and effervescence.

“It would have been easy to hide — let’s face it, others in the Arsenal side did — but he was still demanding the ball, still showing and still battling to the end.

“Gunners fans left the Emirates desperately looking for positives after an opening loss and Guendouzi was the biggest one of all.”

Promising prospect

Guendouzi played relatively well against City, and the Arsenal midfielder gave a good account of himself against the Citizens and underlines his quality.

The France Under-20 international is still developing and progressing as a footballer, but the youngster showed some very encouraging signs against Pep Guardiola’s side.

One should not be surprised if Guendouzi gets better as the season progresses and establishes himself as an important player in Unai Emery’s team.
