The Toffees have spent heavily this summer, but despite being flushed with new signings, they are failing to live up to the expectations. From a top-four dark horse, their season of dreams is fast turning into a nightmare.
Wright notes that Koeman has failed to bring in a proven striker who was badly needed to replace Romelu Lukaku.
Lukaku was the top scorer for Everton last season, and Wright says that it is difficult to take 25 goals out and still expect to compete.
He further adds that Everton seem to lack the energy, and there is no verve in their approach.
Everton are currently languishing the 17th place in the Premier League table. The Toffees have won just once in their last six Premier League games.
But more than the results, it is their overall approach that sends worrying message. New players are struggling to settle down, and old guards are failing to exert influence.
There is little cohesion in their approach at the moment, and the team is lacking in confidence. Koeman cannot sign a striker until January, so he will have to find a way to fix the problem before the situation goes out of hand.
“Youngsters like Dominic Calvert-Lewin, 20, Tom Davies, 19, and Ademola Lookman, 19, are good kids, but you can’t take 25 goals out of a side and expect to compete,” wrote Wright in his column for The Sun.
“At the moment Everton seem to lack energy, there is no verve and they look a bit of a shambles.”
