Ian Wright is sceptical whether Newcastle can follow up Leicester’s surprise success.

Pundit and former striker Ian Wright has given his verdict on whether Newcastle United could win the title in the near future if they are subject of a big money takeover.

The Daily Star has speculated Newcastle could get a ‘£500 million warchest’ to spend if Amanda Staveley’s consortium is successful in buying the club.

Newcastle are in their first season back in the Premier League after relegation in 2015/16, and face a huge challenge to crack into the top six, let alone challenge for the title.

Ian Wright, former Arsenal player, speaks during a Q&A at the Barclays office during the Barclays Asia Trophy 2015 Ticket Launch day 2 on May 13, 2015 in Singapore.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club (23/10 7pm), Wright gave a sceptical response on whether Newcastle can follow Leicester in upsetting the established elite and win the Premier League title.

He said: “Newcastle should be aiming for a top 10 finish. The stars aligned for Leicester. I can’t see those top sides not being involved.

“To win the Premier League in the current climate with Pep, with Pochettino, is going to take some doing.”

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez reacts during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Liverpool at St. James Park on October 1, 2017 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Leicester’s title success, it should be noted, came with smart recruitment and not big money investment.

But it was big wads of cash which propelled Manchester City from also-rans into contenders, and they have two league titles in recent seasons to show for it.

Newcastle have the infrastructure for success, and they already have the manager too, with Rafa Benitez a proven winner in club football.

A league title win in the near future still seems like a pipe dream right now, and as Wright points out, Newcastle need to consolidate and aim for gradual progress rather than expect instant results.
