Newcastle United have completed just five signings so far this summer, with some concerns growing around St. James’ Park.

Ian Wright has told the Debate, which was broadcast on Sky Sports on 9th August, that Newcastle United are not set up to do well in the upcoming campaign.

Newcastle have made minor alterations to their squad this summer, with only five new arrivals signing up.

And Wright feels that Newcastle have not done enough to set them up for the season yet.

“I don’t think they are [set up to do well],” Wright said. “If it’s not going well towards Christmas it may start going back to what we’ve seen before. Rafa, a good manager, not being backed in the way the Newcastle fans would like to have seen him being backed.

“Once it gets going at St. James’ Park, it’s pretty awesome. I do believe Newcastle have got the capabilities to attracting that player, if they money is there.”

Newcastle went into the campaign with great optimism following their promotion from the Championship and promises of a big transfer budget from Mike Ashley.

However, Benitez has not got all the additions completed that he wanted and there now seems to be a fear that the Magpies’ squad isn’t strong enough to avoid a relegation battle at Premier League level.

Newcastle are among the favourites to be relegated this season, with many of their rivals seemingly strengthening more than them in the transfer window.

Newcastle begin their season on Sunday, when they take on title chasing Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park.
